There are some state parks in Mendocino area, but some of the best (Mackerricher))are seasonal. Its a delightful place to camp with good hiking, nice founders grove trail, museum, and more Redwoods - Although not on the coast, Humboldt State Park. Its good to check when they are open.įor some of the nicer ones in California to camp at The key thing is that some of our state parks are seasonal and only open iin the summer months. Boondocking, or camping without hookups, is allowed on most public lands in California, but there are some rules and regulations that you need to know before. Bastendorf county park is very nice, on the beach side of Coos Bay. Beachside State Park south of Waldport is on the beach, but only the west side campsites are good - the east side are next to the highway. There are *very few* places that have tent campsites on the beach. One thing to note - nowadays, some state and national forest campgrounds are *closed* during the winter! For example, Cape Perpetua does not open until about mid May. You won't have to book ahead in early spring, although the north coast will be very busy the last week of March due to Spring Break.
